On Wednesday, dirty energy lobbyists took a big step towards achieving a long-cherished goal: shredding the Clean Air Act.
Leaks from a closed-door meeting between these industries and Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Lindsay Graham (R-SC), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) suggest some serious challenges for the future of our fight against climate change.
One can make the argument that the progress displayed by the leak of a draft Senate roadmap on Wednesday is at least somewhat encouraging since it shows evidence

These are just a few of the examples of policies brought to light by the media in recent months that leave many Americans feeling like second-class citizens without the rights that their peers and colleagues take for granted.
While every member of the LGBT community is affected by the outcome of these initiatives, most of us felt assured that today's youth would be safe -- at least for now -- from the repercussions of our nation's homophobic policies.
This year, however, as our nation enters a new decade,

"It's more insider and process-oriented than most people want to know," the speaker said in a roundtable discussion with bloggers Monday about the reconciliation package.
"But I like it," she said, "because people don't have to vote on the Senate bill."

Some news about the climate change legislation being developed by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) emerged from meetings they had with industry representatives.
According to several sources in the meeting room, the bill will call for greenhouse gas curbs across multiple economic sectors, with a target of reducing emissions 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
Power plant emissions would be regulated in 2012, with other major industri

On the heels of Senator John Kerry promising to produce in the next two weeks an energy and global warming bill that can pass the U.S. Senate, Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, along with 12 other senators recently sent Majority Leader Harry Reid a letter urging him to ensure that the bill does not repeal Clean Air Act protections that require coal-fired power plants to meet modern standards for global warming pollution.
"We applaud Senators Whitehouse and Reed for fighting for a bill that will

"The cap-and-trade bills in the House and Senate are dead."
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) reflected the reality that Congress now faces as it negotiates a comprehensive climate and energy package that might get voted on before this November's congressional elections.
One alternative to cap-and-trade has been a cap-and-dividend bill sponsored by Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) and Susan Collins (R-Maine).
It will be a very different mix of a bill from where we were at the end of the House effort -John Kerry

Reuters Smokestacks, a handy way of illustrating climate-change legislation, loom ominously in the twilight.
President Obama has been quietly lining up the chess pieces in the coming push for climate-change legislation, enlisting former President Bill Clinton to shore up support among moderate Democrats for the upcoming struggle.
This, as Obama's signature issue, health care, remains very much up in the air .
